چکیده

Abstract We present Keck/LRIS follow-up spectroscopy for 13 photometric candidates of extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) selected by a machine-learning technique applied to the deep (?26 AB mag) optical and wide-area (?500 deg 2 ) Subaru imaging data in EMPRESS survey. Nine out are EMPGs with an oxygen abundance (O/H) less than ?10% solar value ? , four sources contaminants moderately metal-rich or no emission-line objects. Notably, two nine have low stellar masses abundances 5 × 10 4 –7 M 2%–3% respectively. With sample five (Fe/O) measurements, (three) which taken from this study (the literature), we confirm that lowest ratios ?2% show high ?0.1, close ratio. Comparing galaxy chemical enrichment models, find cannot be explained scenario gas accretion/episodic star formation history due their (N/O) ratios. conclude can reproduced inclusion bright hypernovae and/or hypothetical pair-instability supernovae (SNe) preferentially produced environment. This conclusion implies primordial at z ? could Fe did not originate Type Ia SNe delays may serve as cosmic clock galaxies.

Low-Mass and Metal-Poor Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are cosmologically distributed, very energetic and very transient sources detected in the γ-ray domain. The identification of their x-ray and optical afterglows allowed so far the redshift measurement of 150 events, from z = 0.01 to z = 6.29. For about half of them, we have some knowledge of the properties of the parent galaxy. At high redshift (z > 2), absorption lines ...

Mmt Extremely Metal Poor Galaxy Survey I. an Efficient Technique to Identify Metal Poor Galaxies

We demonstrate a successful strategy for identifying extremely metal poor galaxies. Our preliminary survey of 24 candidates contains 10 metal poor galaxies of which 4 have log(O/H) + 12< 7.65, some of the lowest metallicity blue compact galaxies known to date. Interestingly, our sample of metal poor galaxies have systematically lower metallicity for their luminosity than comparable samples of b...

Stochastic chemical enrichment in metal-poor systems

A stochastic model of the chemical enrichment of metal-poor systems by core collapse supernovae is used to study the scatter in stellar abundance ratios. Large-scale mixing of the enriched material by turbulent motions and cloud collisions in the interstellar medium, and infall of pristine matter are taken into account. The resulting scatter in abundance ratios, e.g. as functions of the overall...

Evolution and Yields of Extremely Metal Poor Intermediate Mass Stars

Intermediate mass stellar evolution tracks from the main sequence to the tip of the AGB for five initial masses (2 to 6M⊙) and metallicity Z=0.0001 have been computed. The detailed 1D structure and evolution models include exponential overshooting, mass loss and a detailed nucleosynthesis network with updated nuclear reaction rates. The network includes a two-particle heavy neutron sink for app...

High Redshift Supernovae and the Metal-Poor Halo Stars: Signatures of the First Generation of Galaxies

Recent evidence on the metal content of the high-redshift Lyα forest seen in quasar spectra suggests that an early generation of galaxies enriched the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z ∼ > 5. We calculate the number of supernovae that need to have taken place to produce the observed metallicity. The progenitor stars of the supernovae should have emitted ∼ 20 ionizing photons for each baryon in th...
